When it comes to saving money on transportation related costs, it’s important to look beyond the price at the pump to determine if there is value in the products that we put into our vehicles. Fuel additives come in many forms, but not all are equal and not all are what they claim to be.
Buy This: Solvents, Cleansers, Antifreeze and Dry Gas Products
While there is no solid evidence that these products will cause your gas mileage to go up, they are great items for keeping the fuel related parts of your car clean and free of outside debris that can cause you problems.
BUT – If you have a vehicle that utilizes E10 or E85 fuel, you will want to avoid these products altogether as those fuels have those qualities in them already.
Not That: Performance Enhancers, Mileage Boosters
The EPA has tested many fuel additives over the years and has yet to fully substantiate the claims of any performance enhancing/mileage boosting products. Some have been found to have small gains in mileage, but none to the level that the manufacturers have claimed.
If you do decide to try a fuel additive, you will want to pay attention to the recommendations from the product manufacturers. Too much of a good thing can also cause problems.
