One of my New Years resolutions was to stop eating sweets and junk food. I’m doing pretty well so far, the junk food habit wasn’t too hard to kick but the sugar cravings are still there. Last week I decided to take a little road trip to do a little shopping at some outlet malls. I packed healthy snacks for the trip so that I wouldn’t be tempted to buy junk food along the way.
Unfortunately, I left those healthy snacks on the kitchen counter at home! I discovered this when I started to get a little hungry while driving. It was soon time to stop for gas. I knew my snack options would be limited, but decided to check out what was available at the gas station’s convenience store. I’m a huge yogurt lover and was surprised to see a good selection of brands and flavors. I grabbed a vanilla yogurt. The drink section was filled with soda and other sugary drinks, not much of a healthy choice there. I finally found a small bottle of orange juice.
Now if I had wanted a hot dog or burrito or chicken wings, then I was in the right place! But I wanted healthy snacks, so I grabbed a bag of unsalted peanuts, which were a bargain at 99 cents. At the counter there was a basket of bananas so I bought one of those too. I really had no idea I could buy fresh fruit, juice, nuts and yogurt at a convenience store. I just had to really look around and see what was available instead of grabbing the first thing I saw, like I used to do.
It felt good to make these healthy choices for myself. And I felt so good that I had to buy a lottery ticket! But no, I didn’t win. Darn!
